Can you tell me about the Penn State Hazleton program?

Penn State Hazleton is authorized by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing to deliver an 18-month, part-time, evening and weekend Practical Nursing Program.

What is required for application?

Applicants must supply the following: high school transcript or proof of GED, transcripts from any colleges attended, two letters of reference, PA Criminal Background check, PA Child Abuse check, and an essay. Upon acceptance into the program, prospective students must complete a physical examination, proof of immunization, tuberculosis testing, CPR, and provide proof of medical insurance coverage.

Students are judged based on their high school transcript grades, any college credit they have earned, and the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). The TEAS test results are the top criteria for acceptance into the program. Applicants are also judged on their experience as a care provider. Two letters of reference, stating the ability of the candidate to provide care, length of time in a healthcare related position, a personal interview and an essay are considered during the application process.

Are there prerequisites, can I transfer credits earned elsewhere?

There are no prerequisites and no transferable credits.

What is the schedule of classes and clinical practice?

Classroom and possibly clinical work will be done 10-15 hours per week in the evening (3 evenings per week). Clinical experience will be done during first shift (6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) Saturdays AND Sundays (2 weekends per month, every other weekend).

Study time ranges from 10-15 hours per week in addition to classroom and clinical time.

What is the cost of the program?

The current cost for tuition, textbooks, NCLEX preparation program, clinical supplies, liability insurance and uniforms is $16,000. This is subject to change for future programs.

Is financial aid available?

This program is eligible for financial aid. Students are requested to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for federal and state aid consideration.

What is required to apply to the program?

Successful applicants will have a high school diploma or GED. A satisfactory criminal background check and child abuse clearance must be completed. Each applicant must interview with the program coordinator and a staff member. In addition, two letters of character reference are required in addition to pre-entrance testing (Test of Essential Academic Skills).

Once admitted, what is required of Practical Nursing Students?

Students must prove good physical and mental health as determined by a pre-entrance medical examination, documentation of immunizations, tuberculosis and drug screens. Students must provide proof of healthcare insurance for the duration of the program. Attendance regulations have been established. Students enrolled in the Penn State Hazleton Practical Nursing program must adhere to responsible and professional conduct, conforming to generally accepted standards of adult behavior both on and off campus. Personal appearance and dress code, indicative of the student's interest and pride in their profession will prevail. A Uniform Dress code will apply to students reporting to any clinical site. The student is responsible for providing current CPR certification for the duration of the program. Transportation to and from clinical sites is the responsibility of the student. Our program and students adhere to all policies set forth by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Can I remain employed while enrolled in this program?

The 18-month curriculum at Penn State Hazleton was designed to meet the needs of those students who choose to work while pursuing the Practical Nursing Program. It is recommended that students not maintaining at least a 75% average in their program work should limit employment.

Are there CPR requirements for this program?

All Practical Nursing students are required to be CPR certified in Adult, Child, Infant, and AED. Certification may be obtained through the American Heart Society or the American Red Cross. Students are responsible for remaining certified while in the Practical Nursing program. A copy of your CPR card will be kept in your file in the Continuing Education Department.

I have been planning a career in geological sciences for several years, but as an undergraduate I concentrated on getting a solid background in math and science. After graduation, I took a job to allow myself time to thoroughly think through my plans and to expose myself to a variety of work situations. This strategy has been very valuable to me in rounding out my career plans.

During the past 18 months I have had firsthand experience with computers in a wide array of business applications. This has stimulated me to think about ways in which computers could be used for scientific research. One idea that particularly fascinates me is mathematical modeling of natural systems, and I think those kinds of techniques could be put to good use in geological science. I have always enjoyed and been strong in areas that require logical, analytical thought, and I am anxious to combine my interest in earth science with my knowledge of, and aptitude for, computer-related work. There are several specific areas that I have already studied that I think would lend themselves to research based on computing techniques, including mineral phase relations in igneous petrology and several topics in structural geology.

I have had both lecture/lab and field courses in structural geology, as well as a short module dealing with plate tectonics, and I am very interested in the whole area. I would like to explore structural geology and tectonics further at the graduate level. I am also interested in learning more about geophysics. I plan to focus on all these areas in graduate school while at the same time continuing to build up my overall knowledge of geology.

My ultimate academic goal is to earn a Ph.D., but enrolling first in a master's program will enable me to explore my various interests and make a more informed decision about which specific discipline I will want to study in depth. As far as long-term plans, I hope to get a position at a university or other institution where I can indulge my primary impulse, which is to be involved in scientific research, and also try my hand at teaching.

My decision to focus on math and science as an undergraduate and to explore the computer industry after college has equipped me with a unique set of strengths to offer this program. The depth of my interest in geology has only grown in my time away from academia, and although I have identified several possible areas of specialization through prior studies, I look forward to contributing my fresh perspective on all subjects.
